How AI Assistants Actually Work

February 8, 2026·HostedClaws Team

You send a message to your AI assistant. It replies instantly with a thoughtful answer. Magic, right?

Not quite. Here's what's actually happening — explained without the jargon.

The basics

Your AI assistant is a piece of software running in a container. Think of a container as a tiny, isolated computer that exists just for you. It has its own file system, its own memory, and it can't see anyone else's data.

When you send a message via Telegram, here's the journey:

  1. Telegram receives your message and forwards it to your container
  2. Your assistant processes it — loads context from past conversations, decides if it needs to call any tools (like checking your email)
  3. It sends a request to an AI model (like Claude or GPT-4) with your message and context
  4. The model generates a response and sends it back
  5. Your assistant formats it and sends it back to you via Telegram

All of this happens in under a second.

The memory layer

Your assistant isn't just a chatbot. It has memory.

Every conversation, every preference you mention, every task you assign — it all gets stored in a local database inside your container. This is why your assistant can remember that you prefer concise emails, that you hate meetings before 10 AM, and that your dog's name is Luna.

Unlike ChatGPT (which forgets everything when you close the tab), your assistant builds a long-term memory of who you are and what you care about.

The model layer

HostedClaws uses OpenRouter to access AI models. OpenRouter is like a universal adapter — it lets you switch between Claude, GPT-4, Llama, Mistral, and 300+ other models without changing any code.

You can switch models anytime from your dashboard. Want faster responses? Use a smaller model. Need deep reasoning? Switch to Claude Opus. It's all one click away.

The privacy layer

Your data never leaves your container. When you cancel, we delete everything — messages, files, credentials, all of it.

The AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.) process the messages you send to their models, but they don't store them long-term under their standard API policies. Check their privacy policies for details.
